Starting for 2024 taxes, you need to fill out Schedule M1RENT with your Minnesota Income Tax Return to get the renters credit. Before, you had to fill out a separate Form M-1PR. If you own, use your Property Tax Statement. Get the separate tax form called the 2024 Form M-1PR, Homestead Credit Refund (for Homeowners).
Every return the department receives is different and processing time will vary. You can follow the status of your refund by using Minnesotas Wheres My Refund? system. If your return is incomplete or necessary information is not enclosed, your refund will be delayed or your return will be sent back to you.
You may only use Form M1PR to claim the homestead credit or the homestead special refund. You may claim the renters credit by completing Schedule M1RENT with your Minnesota Income Tax Return. Use the table below to determine if you should file Form M1PR, Schedule M1RENT, or both based on your living situation.
If you receive a refund or rebate of real estate taxes this year for amounts you paid this year, you must reduce your real estate tax deduction by the amount refunded to you. If the refund or rebate was for real estate taxes paid for a prior year, you may have to include some or all of the refund in your income.
What are the maximums? For refund claims filed in 2024, based on property taxes payable in 2024 and 2023 household income, the maximum refund is $3,310. Homeowners whose income exceeds $135,410 are not eligible for a refund.
