Maryland has a four-tiered court system consisting of the District Court of Maryland, Circuit Courts, the Court of Special Appeals, and the Court of Appeals.
Under the State Constitution, Maryland has a court system of four levels. It includes two appellate courts: the Supreme Court of Maryland, and the Appellate Court of Maryland; and two trial courts: the Circuit Court and the District Court.
The judicial branch, in turn, has the authority to decide the constitutionality of federal laws and resolve other cases involving federal laws. But judges depend upon the executive branch to enforce court decisions. Courts provide a peaceful way to decide private disputes that people cant resolve themselves.
The Maryland Judiciary advances justice for all who come to Marylands courts. We are an efficient, innovative and accessible court system that works collaboratively with justice partners to serve the people with integrity and transparency. Goals: Provide access to justice.
