Highlanders are descendants of people who settled in the northern mainland and islands of Scotland, which is part of Great Britain. The Highland Scots are unique because of the way they moved in large, organized groups from their homeland to the North Carolina colony.
James Oglethorpe wanted to protect the Georgia colony from possible attacks from Spanish Florida. The men of Scotland had the reputation of being good soldiers, and so Oglethorpe recruited a group of about 175 Highland Scots to settle in the area south of Savannah.
They disembarked on the northern bank of the Altamaha River, where they founded New Invernesslater named Darien60 miles south of Savannah. The Scots were among the finest soldiers in the world and had been recruited by General James Oglethorpe to provide a buffer between the English Colony and the Spanish in Florida.
Clan Campbell of Breadalbane is ranked first. The feud between the MacGregors and the Campbells is well known, but Sir Malcolm claimed that this branch of the Campbells was particularly feared due to its dominance over a large swath of Scotland - and its willingness to defend it at any cost.
While Highland Scots are of Celtic (Gaelic) descent, Lowland Scots are descended from people of Germanic stock.
