The final examination/autopsy report is usually available within 6-8 weeks after the date of death. The family is provided one copy of the report at no charge. To obtain a copy of the final report, contact the Coroner/MEs Office Monday through Friday, 8:30 am 4:00 pm.
This is a free service provided to the citizens of the State of Alabama. 6. Who can order an autopsy?
Most autopsies in Alabama are performed by the State Department of Forensic Sciences, and records of those autopsies are expressly public by statute.
Results for toxicology can take approximately 3 months. Once toxicology results are received the death certificate will be amended with cause and manner of death and sent to Vital Statistics in Montgomery. The amended death certificate will be available approximately 7-10 days after receipt.
The Code of Alabama 1975, Section 36-18-2 states that investigations, including any necessary autopsy of unlawful, suspicious or unnatural deaths and crimes may only be ordered by the 1) Governor, 2) the Attorney General, 3) any circuit judge, or 4) any district attorney in the State of Alabama.
