Eligibility. To file a property tax credit, you must meet ALL of the following eligibility requirements: Your property qualifies as a homestead, and you have filed a Homestead Declaration for the current years grand list. You were domiciled in Vermont for the entire taxable year.
To be eligible for a homestead exemption: You must have owned the property as of January 1. The home must be considered your legal residence for all purposes. You must occupy the home.
Basic Homestead Exemption: This is available to all homeowners who occupy their property as a primary residence. It offers a $2,000 reduction in the assessed value of your home.
Who is eligible for the Homestead Exemption program? Those eligible must be 65 years of age or older or be permanently or totally disabled, meet annual state set income requirements, and own the home where they live as of January 1st or the year in which they apply.
If you qualify for one of the other homestead exemptions listed and are age 65 or older as of January 1, you also qualify for an exemption from the State portion of ad valorem taxes in an amount equal to 100% of the value of your home and up to 10 acres of land.
