There are over 100 exemptions in Oregon. Exemptions can be either full or partial depending on the program requirements and the extent to which the property is used in a qualifying manner. The most common exemptions are granted to disabled veterans (or their surviving spouse) senior citizens and disabled citizens.
About property tax deferral As a disabled or senior homeowner, you can borrow from the State of Oregon to pay your property taxes to the county. If you qualify for the program, Oregon Department of Revenue will pay your county property taxes on November 15 of each year.
At present Oregon has no statewide general homestead exemption or exemptions based solely on age and/or income. Disabled or senior homeowners may qualify for Oregons tax deferral program.
The Deferral program lets citizens borrow money from the Oregon Department of Revenue. If you qualify, the state pays your property taxes each year. They also place a lien on your property, and charge 6% interest.
The exemption amount increases by 3 percent each year. The exemption is first applied to your home and then to your taxable personal property. If you are an Oregon resident and a qualifying veteran or a veterans surviving spouse/ partner and live in your home, you may file a claim and receive the exemption.
