Delaro Complete Fungicide is labeled for control of southern rust and is recommended at the appearance of the disease.
The best management practice is to use resistant corn hybrids. Fungicides can also be beneficial, especially if applied early when few pustules have appeared on the leaves.
Southern rust is a more aggressive pathogen and its presence in a corn field may warrant a fungicide application. Common rust, on the other hand, is less aggressive and its presence in the field does not necessarily warrant a treatment.
Southern rust, caused by the fungus, Puccinia polysora, is the most important foliar disease of corn in the Upper Coast region of Texas. In some wetter years, when very susceptible hybrids are grown, it may require a fungicide treatment to minimize yield loss.
For Southern rust, spray when 50% of leaves observed have one or more pustules. If more than 1-2% of the leaf area is affected, spraying may increase yields. Fungicides are generally less effective in controlling Southern Rust and they must be applied at higher rates.
