On April 20, 2006, Michigan governor Jennifer Granholm signed into law the Michigan Merit Curriculum (MMC) establishing some of the most ambitious core graduation requirements in the nation.
The Michigan Merit Curriculum (MMC) is crafted around the philosophical belief that all students will need post-secondary learning opportunities beyond high school. It is not a curriculum in the traditional sense in that it doesnt describe instructional materials and approaches.
There is no certain core curriculum at the University of Michigan because it all depends on what major you end up doing. While that is the case, there are plenty of time for you to explore your options on campus before setting your foot on a certain major.
A certificate is not equivalent to a diploma and is not an accredited or legally recognized credential. Not all districts offer the option of a certificate of completion and some districts may have different forms of recognition for students who did not participate in or did not complete the MMC requirements.
The Michigan Merit law allows a parent to request certain modifications to the state high school graduation requirements. Personal Curriculum is a general education initiative, not a special education. These Parent Guides provide a description of the Personal Curriculum (PC) process.
