The Medicare Summary Notice (MSN) is used to notify beneficiaries of decisions on claims for Medicare benefits.
This disclosure must be provided to Medicare eligible active working individuals and their dependents, Medicare eligible COBRA individuals and their dependents, Medicare eligible disabled individuals covered under your prescription drug plan and any retirees and their dependents.
The MSN explains the charges that will be paid by Medicare and those that will be paid by you or other insurance (like Medigap or employer insurance). MSNs are mailed to people enrolled in Medicare Part A and/or Part B. The MSN states in large print that it is NOT a bill.
The EOB is not a bill. You only receive an EOB if you have a Medicare Advantage plan or a Part D plan. Medicare Summary Notice (MSN): A summary of claims made by Original Medicare for health care services processed for you during the previous three months. The MSN is not a bill.
