Synthetic gas turbine oils are classified by their viscosity at 100C. The grades are: 3cs, 4cs, 5cs and 7.5cs. The 5cs grade is used in the majority of engines used in commercial aviation. 5cs oils are limited by specification to a maximum value of 13,000cs at -40C.
AW-46 oil is thicker and has a moderate viscosity, so it is recommended for use in temperate climates where weather is not extreme. A hydraulic system operating in a cold climate, however, would operate better with a lower viscosity oil like AW-32 because the thinner oil will be less resistant to flow on start-up.
