The Gathering of Nations is the largest pow-wow in the United States and North America. It is held annually on the fourth weekend in April, on the Powwow Grounds at Expo NM, in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
powwow, a celebration of American Indian culture in which people from diverse indigenous nations gather for the purpose of dancing, singing, and honouring the traditions of their ancestors.
The oldest recorded powwow in North America, the 349th consecutive August Meeting and green corn celebration of the Narragansett Tribe. The word powwow comes from an English alteration of the Narragansett word powwaw or pawwaw, which meant a spiritual leader.
People of all cultures are welcome at most powwows, including those hosted by the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe. Guests are simply asked to respect the American Indian culture by keeping in mind the following suggestions: Bring a chair with you, as there is often not enough seating for everyone.
