Test Pits are excavated in support of a Project to understand the subsurface conditions of the on-site soil. Test pits are required for two (2) main functions for a Stormwater Management Plan (SMP) utilizing infiltration Best Management Practices (BMPs) and for a Title V septic system.
Test Pit Sampling Procedure Test Pits will be excavated with backhoe equipment to provide detailed visual examination of near surface soil, groundwater, and bedrock conditions. Test Pit soil samples may be collected using stainless steel and/or Teflon-lined scoops, trowels, shovels, spoons, or spatulas.
It is the process of digging a test hole in order to locate underground utilities of which the location is more or less unknown. Test pits are used when a contractor needs to verify the depth, size or type of underground utility.
Test Pit logs (Trial Pit) allow entering soil data and generating logs online, including USCS soil descriptions and field measurements, also allowing to create instant fence diagrams.
A deep pit test is performed to determine any boundary conditions such as groundwater, bedrock, or an impermeable surface. A percolation test is performed to determine the percolation rate of the soil.
