The Heritage Village Collection consists of several different villages and some sub-collections within each village. The first was the porcelain Dickens Village in 1984 with houses depicting the time of Charles Dickens and relating to the stories that he wrote.
In the 1970s, ceramic or porcelain Christmas villages were introduced and started to gain popularity. Department 56 was one of the first companies to make these buildings and remains amongst the most well-known.
Macys acquired the celebrated Dickens Christmas Village from Philadelphias Strawbridge Clothier Department Store. Numerous animated figures depict scenes in Dickens A Christmas Carol (1843).
Over thirty years ago, Department 56 began as part of Bachmans, a premiere retail florist in Minneapolis. Bachmans used a numbering system to identify each of its departments. The number assigned to wholesale gift imports division was, you guessed it, 56.
In 1984, Department 56 released the first pieces of its popular Dickens Village series. This series was and continues to be a favorite among collectors, with some villages selling for upwards of $8500!
