Known as banana money, the Japanese currency during the Japanese Occupation became worthless due to runaway inflation which was coupled with blackmarket practices. For example, a ten dollar bill, with a picture of a banana tree on it, could only purchase a banana at best.
The currency was also referred to informally (and with contempt and derision) as banana money (Malay: duit pisang), named as such because of the motifs of banana trees on 10 dollar banknotes. The Japanese dollar was in widespread use within the occupied territories where the previous currency became scarce.
Banana Money was a colloquial term used to describe the Japanese military currency introduced in Malaya and Borneo after the Japanese occupation began in December 1941.
