Only online applications will be accepted. You must include five images of your work to be considered for membership. Images must meet the following strict file size requirements. Images must be at least 1200 pixels on the longest side. Each file must be under 5 MB.
They are made from pigments, a binder, and water. Together these form a paste which is formed into a a pastel stick and left to dry. Different manufacturers have different recipes for pigment and binder, but the basic process remains the same.
Pastel is almost pure color, composed of three elements: finely ground pigments, a dry filler (kaolin, chalk, or plaster), and a binder (traditionally a vegetable gum, such as gum arabic). When mixed with water, these elements form a little paste (pastello).
In wax crayons, as the name suggests the binder is wax. And in case of pastels, the binder is non-drying oil and wax. It is the binder which makes the difference. Pastels tend to smear and smudge and as a result, transfer very easily onto the artists hands or any surface that the colour comes in contact with.
When fully covered with pastel, the work is called a pastel painting; when not, a pastel sketch or drawing. Pastel paintings, being made with a medium that has the highest pigment concentration of all, reflect light without darkening refraction, allowing for very saturated colors.

Pastel is fabricated from one or several finely ground pigments, a pulverized inert white filler such as ground calcium carbonate or kaolin, and a minuscule amount of binder such as gum tragacanth.
Soft pastels are not chalks. They usually dont contain chalk and are nothing like blackboard or pavement chalks, save for the shape and feel. Just like any other artists quality art material, soft pastels are made up of pigment and a binder to keep it in a certain shape.
