Community art is artistic activity that is based in a community setting, characterised by interaction or dialogue with the community and often involving a professional artist collaborating with people who may not otherwise engage in the arts.
Bringing people together! Community arts do just that by providing a space for people of all backgrounds to come together and create something beautiful. This type of art fosters social cohesion by breaking down barriers and fostering understanding between different groups of people.
Housed at the world-renowned California Institute of the Arts, the CalArts Community Arts Partnership provides tuition-free arts instruction in animation, dance, film, music, theater, photography and visual art to youth ages 6-18 in-school, after-school and during the summer.
One example of community art is the so-called image worm, whereby artists on a forum will build upon a canvas and smoothly transition in their own piece between the last piece using image stitching, and then the next artist will build up on it, and so on.
The activity can involve any art form or any combination of art forms including cultural expressions, music, theatre, film, poetry, literature, visual arts, dance, circus, craft and design or digital media.
