aegypti host preference is well characterized. In its invasive range outside of Africa, Ae. aegypti is strongly anthropophilic, preferring the odor of humans over that of other host species10,11.
They are most active for approximately two hours after sunrise and several hours before sunset, but can bite at night in well-lit areas. Aedes aegypti can bite people without being noticed. This mosquito prefers biting people but it also bites dogs and other domestic animals, mostly mammals.
Aedes aegypti is considered the most important vector for Zika virus transmission to humans. Aedes aegypti mosquitoes were found infected in the wild (reviewed in [56]).
Several factors contribute to the success of the species, particularly behavioral plasticity, rapid development, desiccation-resistant eggs, resistance to the principle insecticide classes currently available on the market, preference for the urban environment, and proximity to humans.
Public health officials in Italy have reported 25 cases of dengue since the end of August 2024. Twenty of these cases have been reported from of the Marche region. Dengue has also been reported elsewhere in Italy in recent weeks: there have been 5 cases across Tuscany, Lombardy and Emilia-Romagna.
