What is the e-file rejection grace period for federal tax returns? Any taxpayer who received a rejected e-filed tax return has a rejection grace period of 5 calendar days after the official filing deadline (usually April 15) to retransmit the return or extension.
Yes, the IRS will deposit your federal refund even if your state return was rejected. However, if you e-filed, you will need to fix the issues in your return and e-file again, or mail in your state return.
But what if you complete your taxes by the due date and an issue causes your e-file to be rejected? If you receive a rejection of your e-filed return by the day after the filing deadline (usually April 15), the IRS gives you a rejection grace period of five days to refile a timely filed rejected return.
When the IRS rejects the return through the software the taxpayer is using, the taxpayer will see a brief explanation about what to do to fix and correctly file the return electronically. This saves time and prevents a simple mistake from holding up any refund that the taxpayer may be owed.
The IRS may be able to provide some relief such as a short-term extension to pay (paid in 120 days or less), an installment agreement, an offer in compromise, or by temporarily delaying collection by reporting your account as currently not collectible until you are able to pay.
