Federal regulations require you to notify your DSO within ten days of any changes to your personal or employment information. Then the DSO must update SEVIS within twenty-one days. If your SEVIS record isnt updated, SEVP will terminate your SEVIS record.
If you miss the 10 day reporting deadline, employment updates must still be reported although the SEVP Portal will not allow OPT students to report employment that began more than 10 days in the past. As such, you will need an OIS advisors assistance to submit your employment information for you.
You can only report new employment within 10 days of the employment start date. If you fail to report within 10 days or cannot access the SEVP OPT Portal, you can use the OPT Employer update request at the international student portal. ISS will then manually update your SEVIS record with the employment information.
While on any type of optional practical training (OPT), a student is required to report the following: Change in students legal name. Change in students physical, mailing, or employer address while on OPT. Change in employment or interruption of employment.
Your STEM OPT Extension advisor/DSO will submit your Validation Report in SEVIS after you have successfully submitted this request in the Portal. Your employer must also report termination of your employment to the school within 48 hours, and the school must report that termination in SEVIS.
