The Master Gardener Program was established by the OSU Extension Service to help disseminate horticultural information to the public. Volunteers are trained in participating counties and serve under the direction and guidance of County Extension Agents.
To be certified, you have to attend the 13 week of classes, complete an open book exam, and serve a minimum of 40 volunteer hours by October 31st, 2025. In your first year, you must complete 40 hours of classroom education, complete an open book exam and at least 40 hours of volunteer service.
All Master Gardener programs require participation in gardening classes and training. Again, while specifics vary state-to-state and even university-to-university, classes are generally between 40 hours in length and 60 hours in length.

The UCCE Master Gardener title is to be used only and exclusively in the Extension volunteer Master Gardener Program and not for commercial purposes. You may identify yourself as a master gardener only when performing volunteer work in this Extension-sponsored program.
