College Writing II expands and reinforces the critical reading and writing skills developed in College Writing I. College Writing I was tightly focused on the argumentative or expository essay.
Academic writing is formal writing used in academic settings to communicate concepts, express opinions, and participate in scholarly discussion. It is characterized by complexity, formality, accuracy, objectivity, and precision.
In College Writing II, we study and practice academic research writing. Students will apply their rhetorical knowledge in the context of academic research through regular informal and formal writing.
In comparison, college writing assignments tend to be longer and more complex in nature, as they are oriented around more argumentative or expository writing assignments, and require higher-level thinking in the form of analysis, criticism, and/or synthesis of ideas.
The difference between College Writing (355:101) and College Writing Extended (355:104) is that College Writing Extended includes an 80-minute writing lab each week, in addition to the courses two standard class meetings. As such, College Writing Extended is a 4.5-credit course.
