What is the hardest bar exam to pass? California has a notoriously hard bar exam, with only 45% of first-time takers passing the Feb 2024 bar exam, and 24% of repeat takers passing the July 2023 exam. However, there are other states with lower pass rates in July 2023, including Maine, Wyoming, and Maryland.
Depending on how many people have taken the UBE, a score of 280 is approximately the 73rd percentile. A 300 is in about the 90th percentile, and 330 is in the top 1% of all scores.
You can fail no more than 2 bar examinations EVER. If you have failed, in full or in part, 3 or more bar examinations in any jurisdiction or combination of jurisdictions, you do not qualify for Admission Without Examination.
Virginia: Virginia has a high cut score, and its test could potentially quiz candidates on 24 topics for the Virginia essay portion. This is about 5 more than every other state, and its this extra level of studying that makes Virginia one of the hardest bar exams in the country.
Can I transfer that score to Virginia? Yes. An applicant can use or transfer an MBE scaled score of 133 or greater, taken within 3 years prior to the date of the exam applied for, from either a previous bar exam taken in Virginia or from a jurisdiction other than Virginia.
