Missouri typically requires taxpayers to file a state income tax return if they file a federal return. There are, however, a few exceptions: Residents: You dont need to file if your Missouri adjusted gross income is less than $1,200. Nonresidents: Filing isnt required if you earned less than $600 of Missouri income.
Missouri residents with income from another state, nonresidents, and part-year residents need to file Form MO-CR or Form MO-NRI with Form MO-1040 (long form). Form MO-1040 is the only tax return that allows you to take a resident credit (Form MO-CR) or the Missouri income percentage (Form MO-NRI).
(5) Nonresident Employees. If a nonresident employee performs all services within Missouri, tax shall be withheld from all wages paid as in the case of a resident. If a nonresident employee performs all services outside Missouri, his or her wages are not subject to Missouri withholding.
Who needs to file Form 1040-NR? If youre classed as a nonresident alien, youll have to file form 1040-NR if you worked in the US, or had US-sourced income. Examples of taxable income in the US include: employment/ self-employment income, investment income, taxable scholarship, fellowship grant and rental income.
