Can an F-1 student transfer to another school?

An F-1 student may transfer between SEVP-certified schools. Regulations governing school transfers are in 8 CFR 214.2(f)(8). The transfer process is a way to electronically move Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) records and retain the same SEVIS identification (ID) number for the student.

What is the 5 month rule for F-1 students?

If an F-1 student leaves the United States for more than 5 months and is not able to remain enrolled at the students ICE SEVP-certified school, the student will not be able to maintain student status.

How to transfer as an international student?

You need to inform the DSO that you have arrived in the United States and want to transfer immediately to another SEVP-certified school. You must show proof of acceptance to your new school. You must report to your new school and enroll in a full course of study within 30 days of arriving in the United States.

Can I transfer schools with an F?

Although a failed class will still appear on your transcripts, if you pass the course a second time with a higher grade the previous F will no longer be factored into your GPA making transferring schools much easier!
