Open Public Records Act (OPRA) OPRA is a state law that was enacted to give the public greater access to government records maintained by public agencies in New Jersey. Government records available from Legislative offices are primarily Legislative records.
A request for access to a government record under OPRA must be in writing, hand-delivered, mailed, transmitted electronically, or otherwise conveyed to the appropriate custodian. N.J.S.A. 47:1A-5.
When is a response to an OPRA request due? Generally: As soon as possible. But no later than seven (7) business days after custodians receipt of the request.
State Law requires that in order to request access to government records, you must complete, sign and date a written request for access and deliver it in person or by mail during regular business hours to the appropriate custodian of the record requested.
Paper copies of records cost $0.05 per letter-sized page and $0.07 per legal-sized page; however, the delivery and postage fees could be additional, depending on delivery type. If special equipment is needed to make the copies (e.g., for maps), the requester may be charged the actual cost of duplication.
