Today, there are approximately 2,300 enrolled Mono people. The Cold Springs Mono have 275 tribal members. The Northfork Monos enrollment is 1,800, making them one of Californias largest native tribes.
Also known as: San Joaquin or Big Sandy Band of Western Mono Indians and Big Sandy Rancheria of Mono Indians of California.
Within the aboriginal territory of the Wiyot people, the Blue Lake Rancheria was founded in 1908 as a refuge for homeless Indians. The Tribe was terminated in 1958, and then reinstated to federal recognition status in 1983. Since then, the Tribe has made a concerted effort to rebuild.
That land is known as the Shingle Springs Rancheria, just off present-day U.S. Highway 50. In 1970, the Tribe formally organized under their Articles of Association and set up home sites on the Rancheria. In 1976, the Tribes Articles of Association were approved by the Secretary of the Interior.
History. In 1909, the BIA purchased 280 acres (110 ha) of land for the Big Sandy Band of Western Mono Indians. It was bought in order to provide the tribe with a secure home where they could grow their food, have cattle, and be free from attacks by non-Indians.
