There are two classes of AIS, A and B. The former is Mandatory for all vessels 300 GT and above engaged on international voyages and all passenger ships. The latter provides limited functionality and is intended for non-SOLAS vessels. It is mainly used for pleasure crafts.
Static Information (Every 6 minutes and on request): Name and Call Sign. Length and Beam. Type of ship. Location of position fixing antenna.
What kind of information is AIS-transmitted? Maritime Mobile Service Identity number (MMSI) - a unique identification number for each vessel station (the vessel's flag can also be deducted from it) AIS Navigational Status (read more on the subject) Rate of Turn - right or left (0 to 720 degrees per minute)
AIS transponders provide information - including the ship's identity, type, position, course, speed, navigational status and other safety-related information - automatically to appropriately equipped shore stations, other ships and aircraft; receive automatically such information from similarly fitted ships;
Dynamic AIS™ (D-AIS™) combines three types of AIS data to provide greater vessel tracking data in one place. Many of our customers who struggle with missing ships and data gaps in high traffic zones are reporting improvements since ingesting Dynamic AIS™!

Static Data is information that must be programmed into the AIS at installation and is verified periodically.
Class A AIS transponders are required to have a DSC (156.525 MHz) receiver, external GPS, heading, and rate of turn indicator, and can also transmit and receive safety-related text messages. Class B AIS transponders operate using Carrier-Sense TDMA (CSTDMA) broadcast mode and transmit at a power level of 2 watts.
Dynamic Data, such as position, course, speed, heading, and rate of turn is autonomously acquired from external or internal sensors including GPS, speed log, heading device or gyro. Dynamic Data is continuously broadcast every few seconds.
AIS is simple in concept, using the VHF radio to transmit and receive dynamic data - which is taken from the global navigation system (for example GPS or Glonass) giving the vessels course, speed and position; and static data - (for example the vessel's MMSI number), which is inputted at installation.
