The Michigan Student Test of Educational Progress (M-STEP) is the state assessment used to assess student progress on Michigans standards since 2015. M-STEP has fewer multiple choice questions than the previous MEAP assessment and more questions that require problem solving and critical thinking skills.
In Michigan, testing is mandatory for all children attending a publicly supported school. There are no legal options for opting out of standardized testing.

Which children will be tested, and when? Grades three through seven will take English, math, science and social studies M-STEP assessments. Students in eighth through 10th grades take the PSAT. Eighth graders also must take M-STEP science and social studies exams.
First-time Grade 11 Students X X All three MME components are required. MME Scores in SAT EBRW (ELA), SAT Math, M-STEP Science, M-STEP Social Studies, ACT WorkKeys Retaking the MME is not permitted if a student has scores for all three MME components.
There is NO law saying that students must take the assessment only that the state shall administer it. Several parents have received letters from school principals or attorney stating that they cannot opt out.
