They are required under both state and federal law, to ensure all children are learning and receiving a high-quality education.
Students in grades K-8 and 11 can access sample M-STEP tests here. Michigan Merit Examination (MME) All 11th graders in Michigan participate in an M-STEP science and social studies assessment. Michigan also requires all high school juniors to take the SAT with essay and the ACT WorkKeys.
Grades three through seven will take English, math, science and social studies M-STEP assessments. Students in eighth through 10th grades take the PSAT. Eighth graders also must take M-STEP science and social studies exams.
MI-Access satisfies the federal requirement that all students with disabilities be assessed at the state level. MI-Access is based on Michigans alternate content expectations for English language arts, mathematics, science and social studies.

The Michigan Student Test of Educational Progress (M-STEP) is the state assessment used to assess student progress on Michigans standards since 2015. M-STEP has fewer multiple choice questions than the previous MEAP assessment and more questions that require problem solving and critical thinking skills.
