iOS and Android For iOS (iPhone and iPad) and Android: Hold the - (hyphen) on the on-screen keyboard until a popup appears with choices, including the en dash and em dash.
The dash (), also called the em dash, is the long horizontal bar, much longer than a hyphen. Few keyboards have a dash, but a word processor can usually produce one in one way or another. If your keyboard cant produce a dash, you will have to resort to a hyphen as a stand-in.
- is a hyphen-minus (ASCII 2D, Unicode 002D), normally used as a hyphen, or in math expressions as a minus sign. is an en dash (Unicode 2013). This can also be entered from the Special characters: Symbols bar above the text-entry field; its between the m and is an em dash (Unicode 2014).
A hyphen is not a dash! Hyphens cannot set off phrases or clauses, nor should they have spaces on either side of them. The en dash is longer than a hyphen, but shorter than an em dash (). It is mainly used between dates to mark a span of time.
Generally, hyphens are used to join two words or parts of words together while avoiding confusion or ambiguity. Consult your dictionary if you are not sure if a hyphen is required in a compound word, but remember that current usage may have shifted since your dictionary was published.

Several characters are simply short horizontal lines: the hyphen -, the minus sign , the en dash , and the em dash . Each has a specific purpose, but often the hyphen is used regardless. This is bad practice.
