The Michigan Department of Education has adopted the Michigan State Standards for English Language Arts and Mathematics as the set curriculum standards for students in grades K-12. This means our students will have the Common Core State Standards as the core curriculum in English and Math.
In seventh grade, grammar instruction focuses on concepts such as: Using prepositional phrases and clauses correctly. Understanding and use of all parts of speech, including plural nouns, possessive nouns, verb tenses, adjectives, adverbs, prepositional phrases, and conjunctions.
By the end of seventh grade, students understand how to write narratives to unfold and share real or imagined experiences or events by using effective narrative techniques, related and illustrative details, and a purposefully structured sequence of events.
New topics sometimes include scientific notation, concepts with negative numbers or integers, and more advanced geometry. Some schools allow advanced students to take an Algebra I course instead of following the standard 7th grade math curriculum. In social studies, advanced pre-Civil War History is taught.
Specifically, 7th graders learn to examine texts more closely and use details from the text in order to develop ideas, analyze, and make inferences. In addition, they analyze the relationships between elements within one text and across multiple texts while supporting this analysis by citing evidence from the text.
