From 1776 to 1780 the words State of Massachusetts Bay appeared on the top of all acts and resolves. In 1780, the Massachusetts Constitution went into effect.
MASSACHUSETTS: First of the States to have an Indian name. From the Algonquin word Massadchu-es-et, meaning great-hill-small-place, possibly for the hills around Boston as seen from the bay.
The incumbent is William F. Galvin, a Democrat who has held the office since 1995.

Its also the birthplace of Boston Cream Pie, Nestle Toll House Cookies, Parker House Rolls, and fluffernutter sandwiches, which I took as inspiration for my Fluffernutter Cookies.
The people overwhelmingly rejected the first draft of the Constitution in 1778, which referred to the proposed entity as the State of Massachusetts Bay. John Adams used the term Commonwealth in all subsequent drafts.
