The CANS-NY serves as a guide in decision making for Health Homes Serving Children, as well as to guide service planning specifically for children and adolescents under the age of 21 with behavioral needs, medical needs, developmental disabilities, and juvenile justice involvement.
A rating of 2 or 3 on a CANS need suggests that this area must be addressed in the service or treatment plan. A rating of a 0 or 1 identifies a strength that can be used for strength-based planning and a 2 or 3 a strength that should be the focus on strength-building activities, when appropriate.
2 and 3 = Scores of 2 and 3 always need attention of some type, as both indicate a docHub need or a lack of strength in a particular area. Items scored 2 and 3 should be addressed in the goals for a childs treatment. A score of 3 indicates a need for intensive and/or immediate attention.
CANS assessments cover 7 domains of child needs, history and functioning. Each domain receives a score of 0-3. Generally, a score of 0 in a domain indicates there is no issue or concern. A score of 1 means there is a mild level or history of behavior.
A rating of 0 or 1 on the CANS rating sheet can be used for strengths-based case planning. A rating of 2 identifies an area that should be developed and addressed in the case plan. Any actionable item with a needs rating of 3 must be addressed in the case plan and may require immediate attention.
