On May 9th, firefighters from Taos Pueblo and soldiers from Fort Bliss discovered a tiny North American Black Bear cub who had survived the fire. The soldiers rescued the cub whom they named initially named Hotfoot Teddy. Shortly thereafter they changed his name to Smokey Bear after the fictional character.
This bear received so much mail that the U.S. Post Office gave Smokey his own zip code20252. Upon his death in 1976, he was buried at the Smokey Bear Historical Park in Capitan, New Mexico.
Consists of a two page announcement of the dedication of the Smokey Bear Historical State Park in Capitan, New Mexico, on May 15, 1976, shortly before his death on November 9, 1976. Smokey was found nearby as an orphaned bear cub clinging to a singed tree after a forest fire in 1950.
