Cloud Peak Bighorn Mountains / Highest point
189,000 acres of untouched wilderness full of wildlife, hiking trails, and towering peaks. Named after the Bighorns highest peak, Cloud Peak (13,167ft), the wilderness area truly is a must see while visiting the Bighorns. The only remaining glacier in the Bighorns is also in the Cloud Peak Wilderness.
A 58-mile paved highway over the crest of the Big Horn Mountains, the byway winds past thick forest, lush meadows, waterfalls, and deep canyons. Stretching from the Powder River Basin to the Big Horn Basin, the Big Horn Byway follows US 14 from the west outside Greybull.
During the 1800s, the Bighorns provided tipi poles, lumber for nearby Fort Phil Kearny, beaver pelts, medicinal plants, and abundant big game. Today it continues to provide recreational opportunities, lumber, summer grazing for cattle and sheep, and clear, cool water.
Grizzly bears have not been documented in this area south of the Bighorn Mountains since long before the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem population was listed under the Endangered Species Act in the 1970s, Wyoming Game and Fish said.
