APHIS is the branch of the USDA that provides leadership in ensuring the health and care of animals and plants, especially those that are vital agricultural commodities. Biological materials that may pose a risk to plants and/or animals or their environment are tightly regulated by APHIS.
USDA-regulated Species include all live or dead warm-blooded animals used in research except birds, rats of the genus Rattus, and mice of the genus Mus bred for research. This also excludes cold-blooded animals such as fish, reptiles, and amphibians.
APHIS regulates the import and interstate transport of organisms and vectors of pathogenic diseases of livestock and poultry.
Category I is designed for those in companion animal practice (dogs, cat, rabbits, pocket rodents, reptiles and other animals not covered in Category II). Be sure to understand that Category I does not include pet birds, horses or pigs. Category II allows veterinarians to perform official duties for all species.
Category I animals . Any animals other than Category II animals, e.g., cats and dogs. Category II animals . Food and fiber animal species; horses; birds; farm-raised aquatic animals; all other livestock species; and zoo animals that can transmit exotic animal diseases to livestock.
