Lake Lucero. Lake Lucero lies in the southwest corner of the Tularosa Basin. In the heart of New Mexicos Tularosa Basin, wave-like dunes of gypsum sand cover 275 square miles of desert, part of which is protected by White Sands National Park.
Gypsum is actually a clear substance; the dunes appear white like snow because the gypsum grains are constantly banging into each other. The scratches then reflect the suns rays making them appear white. Also, unlike silica sand, gypsum doesnt absorb heat from the sun.
Located west of Tuolomne Meadows, visitors can drive right up to Tenaya Lake, grab a parking spot, and jump right in. The sandy shore is perfect for picnics, sun bathing, and soaking in the mountain views. Pack your swim suit, your paddle board, or your kayak and head to Tenaya Lakes big blue waters.
Lake Lucero is a dry lake bed that only fills with water when there has been abundant rain or snow in the surrounding area.
White Sands National Park offers a ranger-led tour of Lake Lucero for visitors interested in learning more about the formation of the dunes and the origin of the sands.
