Lake Lucero is a dry lake bed that only fills with water when there has been abundant rain or snow in the surrounding area. The hike from the trailhead to the lake and back is 1.5 miles (2.41 km) long over rough desert terrain and washes. This hike is rated as moderate and the trail is not maintained.
Take a tour to Lake Lucero with a ranger and learn about the formation of the sands and the special plants and animals that live in and around the dunes. These three-hour ranger-guided tours to the playa (dry lakebed) of Lake Lucero are offered once a month and reservations are required.
Eolian erosion mobilizes gypsum crystal fragments from Alkali Flat and the Lake Lucero playa and moves them to the northeast. Sand grains gather into small sand ripples and low dunes under vegetation. Larger dome dunes form farther downwind and, as they advance, they may form barchan dunes.
10,000 years ago to present formation of the dunefield Most of Lake Otero dried up. The dry portions of the lakebed became what we know today as Alkali Flat, while the smaller seasonal playa that remained formed modern Lake Lucero. As Lake Oteros water disappeared selenite crystals formed on Alkali Flat.
