The original boundaries protected an area of 35,528 acres (55.5 sq mi; 143.8 km2). A boundary change and redesignation as a national park and preserve was authorized on November 22, 2000, and then established on September 24, 2004.
Since 1941, the park has been completely surrounded by the military installations of White Sands Missile Range and Holloman Air Force Base. It was redesignated as a national park by Congress and signed into law by President Donald Trump on December 20, 2019.
White Sands National Monument was established on January 18, 1933, by President Herbert Hoover to preserve, the white sands and additional features of scenic, scientific, and educational interest. Todays re-designation recognizes the added significance of the park for its natural and cultural resources.
The story of the worlds largest gypsum dunefield began 280 million years ago when the Permian Sea covered this area and gypsum settled on the sea floor. The formation of the dunefield continues today in an endless cycle of erosion and renewal.
