New Haven Colony was an English colony from 1638 to 1664 that included settlements on the north shore of Long Island Sound, with outposts in modern-day New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Delaware. The colony joined Connecticut Colony in 1664. The history of the colony was a series of disappointments and failures.

The New Haven Lawn Club was originally founded in the late 1800s to create a prestigious establishment that catered to the elite class for leisure activities, especially lawn tennis. As the membership grew, it became evident that a permanent location was needed to accommodate this community of tennis enthusiasts.
The Green was used as the main burial grounds for the residents of New Haven during its first 150 years, but by 1821 the practice was abolished and many of the headstones were moved to the Grove Street Cemetery.
