What is StormReady? It is a National Weather Service program designed to recognize communities (e.g. counties, universities, military bases) that have reached a high level of severe weather preparedness.
To be officially StormReady, a community must: Establish a 24-hour warning point and emergency operations center. Have more than one way to receive severe weather warnings and forecasts and to alert the public. Create a system that monitors weather conditions locally.
StormReady is a nationwide program which began in the summer of 2000. It is a. voluntary program designed to help counties and communities take a proactive approach to the kinds of severe weather that affect their areas by improving local hazardous weather operations and heightening public awareness.
The StormReady program empowers communities to approach hazardous weather situations proactively and allows PCC to plan and communicate effectively before, during, and after storms. But being StormReady is more than a certification: its PCCs dedication to protecting and preserving lives in the face of severe weather.
