National Marine Sanctuary System The Office of National Marine Sanctuaries serves as the trustee for a network of underwater parks encompassing more than 620,000 square miles of marine and Great Lakes waters from Washington state to the Florida Keys, and from Lake Huron to American Samoa.
The deepest point in the sanctuary is 10,663 feet (3,250 meters). It is also the second largest marine sanctuary in the United States (second to American Samoa), the largest marine sanctuary in the world by volume, and the second largest in the world by area. The average surface area is a cold 55 F (13 C).
The Office of National Marine Sanctuaries (ONMS), a division of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), administers the 15 national marine sanctuaries. The program began after the 1969 Santa Barbara oil spill off the coast of California brought the plight of marine ecosystems to national attention.
