The Office of Response and Restoration (ORR) is charged with responding to oil spills, chemical accidents, and other emergencies in coastal areas. Under the National Contingency Plan, NOAA is responsible for providing scientific support to the federal on-scene coordinator for oil and hazardous material spills.
The new technology uses a dual-layer mesh roller coupled with induction heating technique, with material properties that allow it to separate oil from water and then remove that oil from the ocean with extremely high efficiency and throughput.
Shoreline Cleanup Assessment Technique (SCAT) is a systematic method for surveying an affected shoreline after an oil spill. The SCAT method originated during the response to the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill, when responders needed a systematic way to document the spills impacts on many miles of affected shoreline.
THE PRIMARY tools used to respond to oil spills are mechanical containment, recovery, and cleanup equipment. Such equipment includes a variety of booms, barriers, and skimmers, as well as natural and synthetic sorbent materials.
Shoreline clean-up operations are often considered in three stages; Stage 1 - bulk oil is removed from the shore to prevent remobilisation; Stage 2 - removal of stranded oil and oiled shoreline material which is often the most protracted part of shoreline clean-up, and; Stage 3 - final clean-up of light contamination
