To participate in the NFIP, communities must, at a minimum, regulate all development in the designated Special Flood Hazard Area (SFHA) in ance with the NFIP criteria and any applicable State and community floodplain management laws.
The Community Status Book lists each participating communitys effective Flood Insurance Rate Map or suspension information.
Flood insurance under the NFIP is not available within that community. Furthermore, federal officers or agencies are prohibited from approving any form of financial assistance for acquisition or construction purposes in a Special Flood Hazard Area (SFHA).
Over 22,000 communities participate in the NFIP, with more than five million policies providing over $1.3 trillion in coverage.
The NFIP is a federal program, managed by the Federal Emergency Management Administration (FEMA), and has three components: to provide flood insurance, to improve floodplain management, and to develop maps of flood hazard zones.
