Where can I legally fly an RC plane?

UNCONTROLLED AIRSPACE is where there are no air traffic controllers directing the air traffic. If youre an FAA-registered recreational RC pilot or your model aircraft doesnt require registration, you can fly in these areas without additional FAA permission. You must keep your aircraft at altitudes below 400 feet.

How big of an area do you need to fly an RC plane?

RC Park Fliers (models 2lbs or less and max airspeed of 60 MPH): these models will be able to fly in a much smaller area, about 300 x 150, roughly the size of a soccer field. RC Drone racing: these aircraft need a slightly wider field than the RC Park Fliers, about 300 x 300 to accommodate the racecourse.

Can you fly a RC plane in your backyard?

You can fly an RC plane or Drone on your own property and it is NOT TRESPASSSING. As long as you stay under 400 feet. You are restricted to 400 feet by FAA rules. Flying over 400 feet puts you into controlled air space (mostly for helicopters) and could be a problem if you are near real aircraft.
