AIG was one of the beneficiaries of the 2008 bailout of institutions that were deemed too big to fail. The insurance giant was among many that gambled on collateralized debt obligations and lost. AIG survived the financial crisis and repaid its massive debt to U.S. taxpayers.
Most banks repaid TARP funds using capital raised from the issuance of equity securities and debt not guaranteed by the federal government.
AIG was saved by a U.S. funded bailout package that eventually exceeded $182 billion, but the economic damage to the global economy was catastrophic. It was the beginning of the greatest economic catastrophe to hit the U.S. since the Great Depression.
In the third quarter of 2012, the global property-and-casualty insurance business, Chartis, was renamed AIG Property Casualty.
Local insurer Chartis can trace its history back to 1962 when it established American International Underwriters (AIU) South Africa. After decades under the AIU banner and a brief stint as Chartis the insurer announced its rebranding as AIG from October 2012.
