The Number consists of seven digits assigned by IHS Maritime. The label begins with the letters IMO followed by either Company or Registered Owner, then, followed by the seven digits. Once assigned, the Number remains unchanged for a company and/or registered owner.
What is an IMO number? The International Maritime Organization (IMO) introduced its Ship Identification Number Scheme in 1987 to help prevent maritime fraud and enhance the security of merchant vessels.
SP Global Market Intelligence is the sole authority for identifying and assigning an IMO number. SP Global Market Intelligence is able to both validate and issue IMO numbers to Administrations through regular fleet data exchanges with the Administration, as set out in Circular Letter No. 1886/Rev.
1. IMO Numbers for companies and registered owners can be obtained from IHS Markit products and services or can be viewed on the free website .imonumbers.ihs.com. Numbers for new companies, and amendments to existing companies, can also be requested through this site.
The IMO number is permanent, meaning that it remains the same throughout the vessels life cycle. From construction to scrapping, no matter the changes it may go through (ownership, country of registration, name, or flag), a ship keeps its initial IMO number. This identifier can never be reassigned to another unit.
