What you receive from TRS is based on a formula that involves your length of service and your high average salary. TRS uses a very generous formula compared to other state plans as we calculate your benefit using your highest 24 consecutive months of pay when other states use 3 to 5 years of pay.
Like most plans, TRS requires a minimum number of years of service before a member is entitled to receive a benefit. Vesting at TRS occurs when a TRS member has earned 10 years of creditable service.
While you are employed in a TRS covered position, as stated in Georgia law, you cannot make withdrawals or borrow funds from your account. If you terminate your TRS covered employment you may apply for a refund of contributions and interest.
Retirement Certificates recognize an employment career completed in the Federal service.
How much does a Retired Teacher make in Georgia? As of Mar 17, 2025, the average annual pay for the Retired Teacher jobs category in Georgia is $39,339 a year. Just in case you need a simple salary calculator, that works out to be approximately $18.91 an hour. This is the equivalent of $756/week or $3,278/month.
