The child tax credit is a tax benefit for parents and caregivers with dependent children under 17. You can get up to $2,000 per child, but the actual amount you receive depends on your modified adjusted gross income and filing status. High earners may receive a reduced credit amount or may not qualify at all.
You can claim the Child Tax Credit by entering your children and other dependents on Form 1040, U.S. Individual Income Tax Return, and attaching a completed Schedule 8812, Credits for Qualifying Children and Other Dependents.
For example, a taxpayer with two qualifying children may be eligible for a $4,000 credit. Taxpayers may receive the child tax credit as a reduction in tax liability (the nonrefundable portion of the credit), a refundable credit (the amount of the credit in excess of income tax liability), or a combination of both.
Beginning January 1, 2024, qualified taxpayers may claim a refundable tax credit for each qualified child in the following amounts: (1) A credit of $1,600 for each child who is five years of age or younger; (2) A credit of $1,000 for each child who is between the ages of six and 17 years.
The Child Tax Credit (CTC) is available to parents with children under age 17. The CTC gives these parents up to a $2,000 tax credit for each child in the family under 17. Eligible families must be working and earning at least $2,500 a year.
