A Special Event Permit is required for tents and membrane structures having an area in excess of 400 square feet, and canopies in excess of 700 square feet. A permit is required when the aggregate area of individual canopies exceeds 700 square feet when placed side-by-side without separation.

What can a homeowner do without a permit in Washington state?

You do not need a permit for: A storage shed with a floor area of 200 square feet or less, as an accessory to a residential house or for agricultural use. Fences 6 feet high or less. Most retaining walls 4 feet high or less. Replacement of roofing or siding for detached one and two-family houses.
